What is your calling?

By | Davidson Fraser Blog | No Comments

In Christian circles calling is sometimes confined to pastors, preachers and missionaries. Outside the church it is maybe extended to artists, singers and the super star athletes.
Who could believe it a calling to be a small business owner & coach? What is a business coach anyway? And surely not an accountant?!!

Well, I believe these vocations are exactly my calling. My calling very much includes being a husband and dad. For me it also includes my heart for people (men in particular) who have struggled mentally and emotionally in life. Sometimes with the everyday tasks of life, not just the big events. Who knew just cohabitating with the people you love most in the world could be so challenging at times?!! Haa. The most unbelievably satisfying and wonderful much of the time but challenging too right? The people I am called to are not just those who might have addictive personality traits (like me!) or diagnosed with depression. I want us to be a community that care and love each other – every day, just because we can. I want to be someone who cares in the little things as well as the larger more challenging life events. I think if we pay a little more attention in the little things we might just have less people effected by depression and mental illness. Who knows, maybe less crime, heathier relationships? What else could we accomplish together?

So what is your calling? What gets you out of bed in the morning and gets you through the tough times? I think calling is very personal and can look like MANY different things and ways of being. I also think it can be enormous and it can be very small. Even sometime almost entirely unnoticed except to the people who are impacted by your service, act or deed.

Maybe sometimes, especially the little things that are not so noticed by the many.

The kind word or smile toward someone who has nothing to give you in return. But somehow when we give these things freely what we get back is extremely validating and satisfying.
You may be right now, being called into something new and wonderful – big or small. You may also be operating in your gifts right now and right in the middle of your calling and you didn’t notice before.
What is your calling?

Learning, Planning & Focus

By | Davidson Fraser Blog | No Comments

I find Friday a good day to not try and squeeze too much in – to finish the week strong, review progress and direct my focus ahead. Ongoing learning has been a key component to having a business and life I love. I've had to learn well the key technical components to my profession but business and personal improvement is my passion!

Don't believe everything you read or hear and make sure you check it out for yourself before you take on those new “better, stronger, faster” ideas. Be sure to keep forging your own path and not just following the “gurus”. Be open to new ideas and coaching but trust yourself to know good advice from feel good (or feel bad!!) sales pitches.

Plan always! Review, adapt and adjust as you go but plan, plan, plan. Lastly focus! Life and business is full of distractions. Keep coming back to your true north.

A couple of great recent books – both by the same author Mike Michalowicz. Profit First and Pumpkin Plan. http://www.mikemichalowicz.com/resources/

Enjoy the weekend.
